An open letter to my dearest sister on her birthday

From the moment I entered this world and you have been here ready to love me unconditionally. You were and still are an answer to the prayer I was not wise enough to pray. You’re the shoulder I always freely lean on. I can’t seem to envision how life would have turned out if you weren’t a part of it. Through all the good and bad, laughter, heartbreaks, ups and downs you have always been there.

When our once happy home was no more your love for me gave me hope of a better tomorrow.

When I was too blind to see and decide any better you were there guiding me every step of the way.

When mom couldn’t always be there to take care of us, you stepped up and became my second mom #superhero. I can’t remember how many times I have checked your ID just to confirm your age lol, you were just too perfect for your age.

When Phindy was born you came down and you were there for me, helping me care for our little one… I don’t remember a time when I needed you and you weren’t there. I am truly blessed to have a sister like you who has become my second mother.

Even at your lowest, you cared so much to check up on me, you were more concerned about my wellbeing (Who does that?). God for sure worked double shifts on you and I am honored to have spent all 20++ years with you by side.

Words that best describe you have not been invented yet.I am so grateful to have been blessed with such a selfless, thoughtful, caring and loving sister as you are.

Often times we don’t realize the difference we make in other people’s lives, I know for a fact you don’t realize how many times you being there for me has stopped my suicide attempts (a story for another day). I just want you to know while you still alive and kicking that I appreciate you and I love the person you have helped me become.

  • You have taught me that just because I seem to be reaching the end of the rope, it doesn’t mean I should let go but rather I should tie a knot and push through up the rope again.
  • A quote by Gilbert k. Chesterton says “when it rains on your parade, look up rather than down. Without the rain, there would be no rainbow” I am learning to fight for my dreams and to live my life to my fullest potential, and not let the rain nor the wind derail me. All thanks to you.

You’re the mother I hope to become for my children one day. One who will never back down until she is able to provide a better future for her children. You have gone through great lengths, worked so hard even in companies where they didn’t realize your worth and you did all this for my nephews #supermom

Here’s a poem that resonate with us:

It doesn’t really matter if we’re together or apart, You’re never really far from me, You’re always in my heart.

I love the way we both can laugh, Until we almost cry, Yet hug each other tenderly, When real tears fill our eyes.

In some ways we’re so different, Yet our values are alike, so I know you’ll always have my back, whenever trouble strikes.

You know my darkest secrets, and you never judge my pain. You validate my dreams, and let me know they’re not in vain.

The face I often show the world, is who “they” need to see, But you accept me for myself, as God would have me be.

If I could turn one wish to prayer, it would be that you could see, How precious you are in my eyes, and how you’ll always be.

For no matter where life leads us, from now until the end, I pray you’ll feel my love for you, my Sister, My best friend.

~Barbara d. MacAdam

On your special day, I wish you more sunshine than rain. More laughter than sadness and above that God’s arm that is not too short to save may always be there to save you and His ear that is not too dull to hear may always be open to your cries. (Isaiah 59:1)

I love you big sis.

Happy 34th Birthday!
